Children’s Volunteer Health Network (CVHN) will host its fifth annual Hurricane Party on Friday, November 13, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. The bay-front party will be held at “Bentley’s on the Bay,” and feature the rootsy, funky, jazzy, Latin dance music of Jose Conde (www.olafresca.com).

CVHN is a local faith-based non-profit organization that provides free medical, dental and mental health care for uninsured and underinsured children in Okaloosa and Walton counties.

“We are changing the Hurricane Party up this year with an old style Havana Cuban theme,” said CVHN board member Reynolds Henderson. “This is going to be a very unique music experience for the people of South Walton, and the bay-front venue at Bentley’s is just perfect for this kind of party.”

Escape to Create, a popular artist-in-residence program hosted in Seaside, held its first annual Writers’ Conference this month. Organized in small group sessions, the participants explored literary interests ranging from the craft of writing to the pursuit of the pleasures of reading with leading authors, poets, playwrights, songwriters and professionals in the publishing field. Visiting authors conducted insightful workshops, performed eloquent readings and engaged in vibrant panel discussions. Many found the experience to be one of the most exhilarating events they have attended in recent memory! It far exceeded everyone’s expectations!

The conference culminated with a book signing and writers’ reception hosted by Sundog Books. The air was abuzz as aspiring writers exchanged ideas with accomplished authors and admirers shared their literary experiences over a glass of chardonnay and some delicious homemade hour d’ oeuvres. Prudence Bruns (for whom the Beatles’ song “Dear Prudence” was written), thoroughly enjoyed the conference and each of the authors whom she interviewed. You can read further in-depth details about Prudence’s experience at the conference in the upcoming Winter issue of VIE.

This month, in Destin, two prominent surgeons’ formally presented Nero’s leash to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.  Nero is a sixteen-month-old Dutch Sheppard, who is the newest member of the Sheriff’s Office to take a “bite out of Crime”.

Dr. William Burden and Dr. L. Scott Ennis of Destin Plastic Surgery donated over six-thousand dollars to purchase this needed K-9 officer.  Nero is now out of the academy after completing an intensive, 410 hours of certification training.

Nero now joins three drug K-9 officers at the Sheriff’s Office.  Sheriff Michael A. Adkinson, Jr. says “Walton County has the unenviable distinction of having a large number of clandestine meth labs in the state, and our K-9 officers provide a valuable resource in locating them”.

Social Media Chat

fpra-social-media-panel-oct2009-1a[Photo by Kay Phelan]

Today the Northwest Florida Coast Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) held their October professional development luncheon at Marlin Grill in Baytowne Wharf. Organizers for this monthly event decided to switch things up a bit  and host a conversational panel of experts on a hot topic these days: Social Media. Tracy Louthain from the Beaches of South Walton moderated the panel and VIE’s publisher Lisa Burwell had the distinct honor of presenting as one of the panelists along with Stacey Brady from Grand Boulevard, Lori Ceier of Walton Outdoors and Adam Shiland of Shiland Creative Group. We had a lively discussion and a few funny moments as panelists divulged personal stories and opinions about the good, bad and the ugly of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. Everyone seemed to walk away armed with new information and fresh ideas about how to move forward in this fast-paced burgeoning realm of the industry.
