Emerald Coast Seafood Showdown Winners!

Chef Phillip McDonald of Table Five (recently featured in the fall issue of VIE) and Chefs Jim Richard, Todd Misener and Brannon Janca of Stinky’s Fish Camp tied for the Judges Choice award at the inaugural Emerald Coast Seafood Showdown on Sunday, September 27th at Baby J’s on the Destin Harbor. McDonald also took home the prize for the People’s Choice category.  His award-winning dish was Pan Seared Filet of Local Black Grouper, Cream Corn, Preserved Lemon, Fresh Herbs and Olive Oil. The Stinky’s Fish Camp crew prepared Salt-Crusted Local Redfish and Speckled Trout with Lemon-Thyme infused oil.

Mistletoe Market

The Junior League of the Emerald Coast is proud to host the second annual Mistletoe Market, November 12-15, 2009 at the Emerald Coast Conference Center. This three day shopping extravaganza will feature merchants from around the country selling unique gifts and quality merchandise.  This event enables local residents and visitors to shop while supporting the community projects of the Junior League, a non-profit organization of women dedicated to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Rhythm & Hues Cruise

SunQuest Cruises has developed a special cruise series aboard their premier dining and entertainment yacht, Solaris, for music and art lovers called the Rhythm and Hues Cruise. It features a cruise of the bay, great live music, art gallery & hors d’ oeuvres. This cruise series is designed to be a one-of-a-kind experience. Guests are also invited to donate any unused instruments during the cruise which will be given to Playground music to refurbish. The instruments will then be given to students who wish to participate in local school band programs, but cannot afford to purchase or lease instruments.

Michael McCarty, the 2009 TDC Artist of the Year recently featured in VIE’s fall 2009 issue, will be providing the artwork for this cruise and a number of talented musicians, including the EdMo Project, will provide the entertainment.

Rare Golden Spider Silk Cloth

Inspired by turn-of-the-century French missionary Jacob Paul Camboué, who worked with spiders in Madagascar during the 1880s and 1890s, scientists have created a rare textile made from the silk of more than a million wild golden orb spiders throughout Madagascar! Spider silk, which is stronger and much more flexible than steel or Kevlar, is the subject of intrigue and study by researchers throughout the world.

Beach Properties WaterColor Grand Opening

Beach Properties of Florida hosted a grand opening celebration on September 10th to commemorate the opening of its second office location in WaterColor located in the front offices of the SunTrust Bank building in WaterColor Crossing.  The 1350 square foot office is currently home to co-owner and sales executive John David Sullivan and sales executives Tommy Brantley, David Lilienthal, Ann Mosely, Will Palmer and Byron Dumas.  Beach Properties of Florida’s main office location remains at the Grayton Beach office on Clayton Lane.

Control Tower Coronation

Earlier this week, PcbDaily was invited to witness the historic crowning of the new Panama City – Bay County International Airport control tower. Jason Koertge from PcbDaily was kind enough to share this video footage of the moving, ceremonious event. (Check out his thoughts on the experience here.) The airport is really coming and it is really going to change everything!

YOLO Board Seaside Celebration

Last Saturday, the YOLO Board Seaside Celebration raised $11,250 to benefit 18-year old Destin resident Holly Burke and 28-year old South Walton resident Jason Thompson. Holly is battling a rare aggressive melanoma and Jason is fighting a rare form of leukemia. The all day celebration included morning paddleboard races on the Gulf, a silent auction, a YOLO Yak giveaway, and a concert from the popular Gulf coast group HERITAGE.  Proceeds will be divided equally among Holly and Jason’s respective charities.

YP @ the Beach

The newly formed group YP @ the Beach kicked off its schedule last week with its first professional development luncheon at Calypso Café in Panama City Beach.  The program featured fellow young professional and Florida State Representative Jimmy Patronis of Panama City, who shared his experiences and early career path. Patronis offered advice and urged the group to learn more about local businesses, continue to be actively involved in chamber or other organizations, and to give back to the community by working with a charity or non-profit.

Art For The Heart

From Friday, October 2 to Saturday, October 10, local artists will join together to host a weeklong “Art for the Heart” art show at Grand Boulevard at Sandestin®. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. The opening event will begin Friday, October 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Gallery at Grand Boulevard, located near Fusion Art Glass and Orvis. A variety of art styles will be displayed, including traditional, impressionistic, modern and more in both small and large formats. This event is free and open to the public. Following the opening night on October 2, the event will run daily until Saturday, October 10 from 12 to 9 p.m. On Sunday, October 4, the hours are 1 to 5 p.m.
