Coldwater Creek, a national, leading retailer of quality fashion for women, is gearing up to host the Fall segment of its semi-annual, nationwide “Try It On for the Cure®” initiative at Grand Boulevard at Sandestin®. The one day only event, hosted on Sunday, September 13th, during regular store hours, encourages all area women to stop in to any of the Coldwater Creek stores and try on clothes as a fun and easy way to join in the fight against breast cancer.  Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the local affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

Coldwater Creek’s “Try It On for the Cure®” is a simple program that has far reaching benefits for women and no purchase is necessary to take part.  For everyone who enters a dressing room and tries on an item from Coldwater Creek’s extensive collection at any store on September 13th, Coldwater Creek will donate $1 to the local affiliate of Komen for the Cure.

For those who choose to make an in-store purchase during the one day fundraiser, the retailer will also donate 10 percent of the day’s sales from each of these stores to the local affiliate of Komen for the Cure.

“Try It On for the Cure is a terrific example of how people can get involved in the breast cancer movement in a fun and meaningful way,” said Hala Moddelmog, CEO of Susan G.Komen for the Cure®. “We’re grateful for the longstanding and constant support of our friends at Coldwater Creek, who have done so much to advance Komen’s mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever.”

Fall Food Festivals on the Gulf Coast During National Seafood Month

destin-seafood-festival1

October is National Seafood month and what better place is there to enjoy fresh seafood than at THE Beach on Northwest Florida’s gulf coast. Here you’ll find fish and shellfish boiled, fried, blackened, sautéed, raw and as the featured item in many original culinary creations, but that’s not the whole enchilada. There are actually a variety of fall food festivals taking place all across the 227-mile coastline of THE Beach, cooking up everything from shrimp to barbecue to German sausages. Starting in late September each year and continuing through the month of November, thousands of visitors come to these sugar-sand shores for great food, fine wine and live music.

Some festivals, such as the Destin Seafood Festival, join up with other events in the area like the Destin Fishing Rodeo and the Destin Seafood Festival Golf Classic. It’s a great way to provide visitors with an even wider range of activities. Some festivals are a one-day event while others last two, three or four days. Some offer competitions among the best local cooks, while others offer area restaurants the chance to create mouthwatering recipes or bring out some of their tried and true favorites. As vintners dig through their wine cellars for their best vintages and beer makers blow the foam off their best brews, it’s like one long progressive dinner and everyone’s invited. So grab a handful of napkins, check out the menu and dig in to fall culinary travel at THE Beach.

LA COCINA!

Friday, August 21st, 2009

picture-1

Thirty-A’s new amazing Mexican restaurant, Mi Cocina, is getting a name change to “La Cocina” (”The Kitchen,” in Spanish). Owners, George and Ann Hartley, (great friends of VIE), named the grill and bar after their favorite restaurant in Dallas, which is owned by a friend of theirs. Unfortunately that friend has a national trademark on the name, which George and Ann were unaware of. But the new name suites the little restaurant nicely–we might even like it better!

And after Labor Day they have great plans to make a few more changes to give you more of what you are loving the most!  You’ll see a Happy Hour from 4-6 daily, more appetizers, more specialty margaritas made with fresh fruits, more combination plates (enchiladas and tacos just like you like it) and $6.95 lunch specials that will make you want to eat there every day of the week!!  So, great things are happening at La Cocina. They’re even installing a TV in their bar for football season!!

A Southern Biscuit and Dinner Roll Taste-Off with Nora Ephron

Sister Schubert’s delicious rolls were just featured on SeriousEats.com – one of the most prestigious foodie blogs out there – by Nora Ephron, writer/director of the new box office hit Julie & Julia!

Here is an excerpt from the post:

Sister Schubert’s biscuits were more crumbly than flaky, but they were light and slightly crisp on the outside, tender on the inside. Pleasantly salty, they also offered a nice butter representation. We all agreed: we would happily eat SS’s biscuits any time. We were especially partial to Sister Schubert’s Parker House Style Rolls (man, those were seriously tasty), as well as her moist and slightly-too-sweet cinnamon rolls.

Junior League Child Clothing Project

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

The Junior League of the Emerald Coast (JLEC) announced its signature community project – Child Clothing – for October, marking the 31st year.  Over 300 disadvantaged Okaloosa and Walton County elementary students will be treated to a morning shopping spree at Target in Mary Esther.

The cost to clothe a child during this project is approximately $100. Students will receive a complete wardrobe, lunch, games and arts activities.  The JLEC is looking for cash donations to help sponsor these children and in-kind donations for the arts and crafts area and goodie bags.

The project began in 1979, clothing 35 children from Fort Walton Beach elementary.  Since then the JLEC, through the communities support has been able to clothe over 4,600 children and expand the project to two counties.  Last year 25 schools in Okaloosa County and 5 schools in Walton County participated.  The students are chosen by their teachers and guidance counselors.

The Child Clothing Project provides much-needed clothing to local underprivileged children and also makes a positive impact on their self-esteem.  During this special day, the students are paired with a volunteer personal shopper and select a new wardrobe, consisting of a jacket or fleece, shirts, pants, socks, underwear, and shoes.  Local JLEC members and community volunteers serve as volunteer personal shoppers and help students select the correct size and fit for their new clothes and ensure a fun experience.  After shopping students are treated to lunch and free time which consists of various structured games and activities.  The students also receive a goody bag of donated items from community businesses.

Lisa Burwell Speaking at FPRA Luncheon

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

lisaburwell

While we all seemed to have survived Tropical Storm Claudette relatively unscathed, she did create a few logistical issues in her wake. One of those issues being that Dwaine Stevens from Publix, who was scheduled to speak at the Florida Public Relations Association’s (FPRA) August Professional Development meeting this afternoon, had to cancel his trip. Always expecting the unexpected, Lisa Burwell, president and founder of Cornerstone Marketing & Advertising, Inc. and publisher of VIE magazine, agreed to fill in for him with only a day’s notice. She was previously scheduled to speak to the FPRA in October, but this unexpected turn of events allows her the opportunity to talk about some of the new and exciting things going on at Cornerstone including their recent foray into the publishing world with Sister Schubert’s new cookbook Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters.

(Click to read the rest of this post for more information on Lisa Burwell.)
