Rosemary Beach merchants and homeowners, Faisal & Jenifer Syed, are partnering with Gina Shiflett of Salon Twist to host a Change the World fundraiser dinner at their house for the Global Village Foundation (www.globalvillagefoundation.org) on Sunday, June 14, at 5:00 pm.

This organization, founded by Le Ly Hayslip, benefits children in Vietnam by building schools and providing mobile libraries, among other things. Her main focus is not only trying to improve conditions for learning but to teach the teachers how to use books in schools, bring books to life and inspire students and teachers. All of this is pretty amazing in itself…. but add to this the fact that she has a story of survival from the Vietnam war that’s so powerful Oliver Stone made a movie about it (Heaven and Earth)…. and this is one incredible lady! Lydia Dean, founder of Go Philanthropic (www.gophilanthropic.com) which partners with Le Ly and Global Village, will also be attending and sharing how they’re helping people explore their world and make a difference in it at the same time. Check her out…. very cool!

Le Ly is going to bring Vietnamese groceries all the way from California and she’s going to cook the meal! The cost is 100.00/person and 175.00/couple

ALL proceeds will go to the Global Village Foundation

** Please also bring a small children’s paperback book for one of the portable libraries**

If you’d like to attend please RSVP soon to Jane Burns at mejane@me.com or 685-8505.

Faisal and Jenifer’s house is located at 102 West Kingston.

Can’t attend but want to donate?

Mail check (payable to Global Village Foundation) to: Jane Burns, 104 Pointe Circle, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459.

Portofino Island gives new meaning to tennis as a ‘lifelong’ sport. Michael Edge, Director of Tennis for Portofino Island, successfully taught tennis lessons for 24 straight hours May 15-16, 2009. Through contributions from all the players taking lessons and the local tennis community, Portofino Island raised $2300. All of the proceeds were donated to the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides for Breast Cancer.”

The Marathon began at 9 am on Friday with a Cardio Clinic for Portofino Island developers Robert Rinke and Andrew Rothfeder, and ended with a group lesson with Portofino Island General Manager Rob Babcock, his wife and Group Sales Director for Portofino, Sabine Laguna, and their daughter Zoe Babcock. More than 80 local tennis players from Pensacola, Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach took lessons throughout the day and night, including an evening clinic where local tennis pros Krysta Edge, Jean Lee, Allison Pfiefler, Rob Fair and Vivian Chhetri helped run 40 players through drills and games.

“Don’t Quit–Never Give Up!” A Call for Artwork Honoring Taylor Haugen

The Taylor Haugen Foundation was established by Brian and Kathy Haugen in memory of their beloved 15 year-old son who passed away on August 30th 2008 from injuries sustained during a football game, while playing wide-reccever for Niceville High School.

The Taylor Haugen Foundation is accepting new and previously written essays, poems, letters, and original artwork for a compilation of community works. Submissions should focus on either Taylor’s personal mantra of “Don’t Quit- Never Give up” or how Taylor’s life and death has effected the writer or artist’s commitment to family, faith, or community.

“We have heard that students have used Taylor’s story as the basis for their college essays, as English writing assignments, and in church youth groups as the foundation for discussions and bible study,” said Brian D. Haugen, Taylor’s father and President of the Foundation. “We are now making a concerted effort to collect previously written essays, letters and poems, and encouraging the community to submit new works, so we may share these stories as a tribute to Taylor and the impact he made.”
