However, the highest accolades we have received come from people in the community who have experienced the positive effects that we strive to produce with our magazine.”

We like to celebrate the good things we hear about in our community and news of a thriving business in these times is well-worth celebrating!

Beach Properties of Florida, a local real estate company founded by Hunter Harman, Price Rainer, and John David Sullivan in 2007,  is opening a second office location in WaterColor  located in the front offices of the SunTrust Bank building in WaterColor Crossing. Beach Properties of Florida’s main office location remains at the Grayton Beach office on  Clayton Lane.

“Our agency has experienced incredible growth over the past year in both increased sales and new agents joining our team,” said co-owner and broker Hunter Harman.  “Many of our agents focus primarily on the areas of WaterColor, Seaside, WaterSound, Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach so we felt it was essential to establish a physical presence closer to these communities.  We are excited about this new expansion and what it means for our agency and our local real estate market.”

Upon completion, the office will house a ‘Community Discovery Center’ featuring flat screen TVs, informational guides, and area maps to acquaint buyers and sellers with the area in an intimate, comfortable setting.  Customers will be able to view properties, communities and aerial maps in order to fully compare and experience prospective properties. The Community Discovery center will be unique to the Beach Properties of Florida WaterColor office.

VIE Visits Destin Middle School and Creates Contest for Students

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Today, VIE had the privilege of visiting Carmen Patterson’s two fifth grade classes at Destin Middle School at the invitation of Leah McGill, Education Director for the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation. Lisa Burwell spoke to the students about the process of creating a magazine and told them the story of VIE as the students flipped through past issues. We found that these students were very bright, intuitive and kind and their teachers were very warm and welcoming. We really enjoyed meeting them and listening to their insightful questions and ideas.

In fact, these kids are so great that we decided to create a contest for them. In previous issues, VIE has published a feature which is always written by a child called “I Can Make A Difference by…” Students from each class who wish to participate  in the contest will each write an article for this featured section about ways that they can make a difference in the world. The top three winners will have their stories published in the fall issue of the magazine! Winners will be announced on June 3.

Bay Point Marina (in Panama City) has joined forces with the St Andrews Bay Yacht Club and Bay Point Yacht Club to bring the Leukemia Cup to the Emerald Coast for the very first time. This nationally recognized sailing event will feature three days of food, live music, golf tournaments, tennis tournaments, silent auctions, children’s activities, art shows, wine tastings and, of course, world-class sailing.

The inaugural Leukemia Cup Regatta at Bay Point will make its debut in Panama City in May. This fundraising event is designed to raise money to fight blood cancers and will be held at Bay Point Marina May 7th-9th.

The Leukemia Cup Regatta is a series of events held throughout the country. Since its inception, the sailing community has raised millions of dollars to support the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through this event. In 2008 alone, more than $3.6 million was raised at 38 Regattas, bringing the overall campaign funds raised to more than $27 million.

The festivities will begin on April 22nd at the St Andrews Bay Yacht Club with a presentation from guest speaker Gary Jobson.  Jobson has been national chairman of The Leukemia Cup Regatta since 1994 and is a world-class sailor, television commentator, author and corporate advisor based in Annapolis, MD. He has won many championships in one-design classes, the America’s Cup with Ted Turner in 1977, the infamous Fastnet Race and many of the world’s ocean races. He has led ambitious expeditions to the Arctic, Antarctica and Cape Horn.

SafeAssured Event at Beach Community Bank

Monday, April 20th, 2009

safeassured-broadcast-1

In this day and age, safety is a top priority for everyone, but especially for parents. Being prepared for any emergency allows parents to be proactive in their responsibilities to safeguard their children.

On Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 12:00, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Beach Community Bank are holding a SafeAssured event  at the bank’s Crestview office at 5131 S Ferdon Boulevard, located at the intersection of Highway 85 and P.J. Adams Parkway.

The SafeAssured Digital ID Kits allow parents and guardians to put a child’s identifying information and video on a mini-CD that is maintained by the family.

Appointments for the event on May 9 are now being accepted for children ages five and up. To schedule an appointment, please contact Jennifer Tallman with Beach Community Bank at (850) 244-9900 ext 255 or jennifert@beachcommunitybank.com.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is the first law enforcement agency in our region to offer the SafeAssured Digital ID Kits. Having digital information ready for quick dissemination is critical to any effort to find a missing child. Beach Community Bank sponsored the first wave of SafeAssured ID kits with a $10,000 donation. Because of the bank’s sponsorship, the SafeAssured ID kits are prepared at no cost to families receiving the kits.

On April 14th, The New York Times published an article featuring Sister Schubert and the story of her legendary homemade rolls. Patricia “Sister” Barnes is coming out with a much-anticipated new cookbook this summer called Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters

The following is an excerpt from the article.

Mrs. Barnes, now 57, got everything right. She used her grandmother’s recipe. She dipped her Parker House-style yeast rolls in real butter. She baked her rolls until done, but not fully browned, and packaged them in round tins.
