St. George Lighthouse Dedication

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Built in 1852 on what is now Little St. George Island, the Cape St. George Lighthouse is a symbolic landmark of the island. However, after years of beating the odds, the Light finally succumbed to beach erosion and pounding waves. On Friday, October 21, 2005, the Cape St. George Light collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico.

The St. George Lighthouse Association was established to “rescue the light.” The goal was to eventually rebuild the Light on safer ground where it can be visited by future generations and live on as an important part of our maritime history. Working with state and federal government support, the St. George Lighthouse Association spearheaded the effort to salvage the pieces of the Light. Volunteers cleaned the mortar off thousands of the old bricks. The original plans were obtained from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and the lighthouse was reconstructed on St. George Island, using as much of the original materials as possible. On Monday, December 1, 2008, the reconstructed lighthouse was opened to the public.

On Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 10 a.m. a Dedication Ceremony is being held at the lighthouse for the newly reconstructed Cape St. George Light.  A barbeque and silent auction will be held that afternoon to raise funds for the construction of the Lighthouse Keeper’s House.

Our Art Director, Eric Shepard, came across this incredible artwork of celebrity portraits created from found objects. We like it a lot so we thought you might too. We only know the artist by his or her flickr profile name iri5, but we just love the works posted there.

The artist describes his/herself as “an artist who specializes in using non traditional media… old books, cassettes, playing cards, magazines, credit cards… whatever I can find. It feels great to work with strange, older materials. Things that have a mind of their own. Most everything I use has been thrown away or donated at some point. Past its prime, like some of the finest things in the world.”

The first Friday of every month Seaside celebrates art and community with Art Walk. From 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. galleries and boutiques welcome guests with lively music, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and special events.

On Friday April 3, 2009, one of these participants, Newbill Collection By The Sea, will be hosting Tallahassee photographer and former State of Florida Archaeologist, Jim Miller. He will be the gallery’s guest artist  during the monthly Artwalk in Ruskin Place Artist Colony. “Zooming In On Birds” is the focus of the exhibit.

Miller has explored Florida’s natural lands for decades.  He recently combined his lifelong interests in art and natural history to produce a body of bird photographs of unusual clarity and intensity.  Miller’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Florida.

He comments that “Personally, these photographs reflect my lifelong interest in Florida and its amazing environments and creatures.  I have had the good fortune to study and work in many natural Florida landscapes and to consider how people and the environment have interacted over thousands of years. The photos are my way of sharing some of the feelings and emotions that natural Florida evokes.”

Boxed Water Is Better

We like to applaud innovation, creativity and kindness to the environment. This is a company that seems to embody all of those qualities. Boxed Water Is Better claims to be, “part sustainable water company, part art project, part philanthropic project, and completely curious.” The simple straightforward design of the box boldly states the overarching goals of the company to reduce the carbon footprint left by plastic water bottle packaging. Using trees harvested in a responsible way and donating 20% of their profits back to water and forestation organizations, it seems these guys are doing their part to use sustainable resources and limit their impact on the earth.

Style Icon India Hicks to Host World’s 1st Outdoor Projection Art Festival

We are very excited to let you know that India Hicks will host this year’s “Digital Graffiti” festival on Saturday, June 6th. Digital Graffiti is the world’s first outdoor projection art festival, with artists using the latest technologies to project original works onto the town’s iconic white walls.

A well-known author, TV host and fashion model for Ralph Lauren, Gap, and J. Crew, among many others, India Hicks is the daughter of legendary interior designer David Hicks, who was hailed by The New York Times as “the most famous decorator of his day.” India is Prince Charles’ second cousin, and is in line to succeed to the British throne. In 1981, she served as bridesmaid to Diana, Princess of Wales. India is an author of numerous style books, is a hotel owner and is the creator of an all-natural body-and-home-fragrance line. India recently hosted the second season of the Bravo TV series “Top Design,” an interior design competition.

India’s visit is sponsored in part by “Studio b” (www.studiobthebeach.com), a creative venue that hosts intimate and inspiring seminars, classes, lectures, social gatherings and other cultural opportunities that feature world-class talents in the fields of design, photography, art, literature, food and wine.

“India is not only revered worldwide for her unique sense of style, but also for her warm and genuine personality,” said Colleen Duffley of Studio b. “I truly can’t think of a more perfect person to host this year’s Digital Graffiti festival.”

Digital Graffiti explores how design, technology and architecture can intertwine to create entirely new art forms. For one night, Alys Beach opens its courtyards and cobblestone paths to innovative companies and ground-breaking artists who fuse these three elements to literally transform an entire town into a living work of art. Sometimes referred to as “Photon Bombing,” “Guerilla Projection” or “Urban Projection,” underground artists around the globe have been using the latest design, animation and projection technologies to cast dynamic images onto skyscrapers and other urban structures as a means of artistic expression. But Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach is the first outdoor festival specifically organized to celebrate and showcase these unique talents.

“Alys Beach is welcoming painters with open arms and white walls,” wrote USA Today of the inaugural 2008 event. “But with projectors and laptops rather than spray cans.”

The 2008 festival attracted digital artists, filmmakers, musicians, interactive designers, photographers, VJs, producers, celebrities, agency executives and fans of art, technology and architecture. Over $6,500 in prizes were awarded to artists, with digital submissions being received from as far away as Israel, Austria, Canada, Germany, London, India, France, Italy and China. The 2008 “Best of Show” prize ($2,500) was awarded to Robert Seidel of Jena, Germany for his digital work entitled “Futures.”

This year’s deadline for all digital art submissions is April 30th. For specific submission rules and guidelines, or for more information about Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach, please visit www.digitalgraffiti.com.
