Crayon & Paper Pixel Art

From the classic pointillism of Seurat to the digital age of pixels and back, artist Christian Faur  (who we discovered on Drawn.com) is using the same technique with a new medium that creates a new meaning all its own. Who knew a box of crayons to lead to such intricate works of art? Christian Faur discusses the inspiration behind his striking creations, “My earliest memories of making art involve the use of wax crayons. I can still remember the pleasure of opening a new box of crayons: the distinct smell of the wax, the beautifully colored tips, everything still perfect and unused. Using the first crayon from a new box always gave me a slight pain. Through a novel technique that I have developed, I again find myself working with the familiar form of the crayon.”

But crayons aren’t the only media he is using. In another work entitled, 1000 Names on Paper, the image of an American soldier is made from shredded paper that is printed with one-thousand of the most common names of those currently between the ages of eighteen and twenty-eight acording to the Social Security Administration. The image is made possible because of the way the text is rendered using different font sizes and “kernings” to appear darker or lighter.

We just can’t help but appreciate this kind of creativity.

12-Year-Old Turns Trash Into Treasure

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

home-dome_erpo1_481

When 12-year-old Max Wallack was only six he visited Chicago and found a purpose. His young heart broke when he saw homeless people beneath highways and underpasses. From that moment on, he decided to do what he could to help them. He said, “I felt that my goal and obligation was to find a way to help them.”

Well, on the PBS production Design Squad’s Trash to Treasure contest he did just that with his new invention the “Home Dome.” The contest asked kids to create practical inventions from trash. So, Max took some of your basic trash materials–plastic, wire and packing peanuts–and fashioned a shelter for the homeless. For his trouble, Max received  $10,000, a Dell laptop and a trip to Boston. But according to Green Building Elements, Max said, “I don’t really care about the money. I care about helping people.”

Max’s “Home Dome” has the potential to improve the living conditions for homeless people, refugees, or disaster victims by giving them easy-to-assemble shelter––exactly what Max has been dreaming about. If curing the ails of systemic poverty is what this kid is doing with his spare time when he’s twelve, we can’t wait to see what he’ll do when he grows up!

Simply Chic

Looking classic has never been cooler. Tried-and-true clothes take center stage in the next statement called Simply Chic. Waist definition, vest treatments, puff sleeves, Peter Pan collars, bows, ruffles and ribbon are important. Textiles take a traditional turn - yes, the usual suspects: linen, cotton, eyelet, lace, sheers and satin. Prints are plentiful; there is a fondness for florals along with dots, checks and plaids. Look for sheath and shirtdresses, shorts, crops and fitted blazers.

Simply chic accessories are the icing on the cake. Ladylike and luxurious looks are back, such as vintage-inspired pearls, brooches and dramatic earrings; belts and tailored clutches and satchels add the perfect polish.

Amputee Becomes a Mermaid

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Some innovation is so intriguing that it forces you to stop and stare then wonder why no one has thought of this before. That’s how we felt about this discovery.

Nadya Vessey’s legs were amputated below the knee when she was a child due to illness. At one point, another kid asked her what happened to her legs and she told him she was a mermaid. Years later she decided to make her creative childlike reply a reality and she wrote to Weta Workshop in Wellington, New Zealand, asking for a mermaid tail. To her surprise, they said they’d do it!

Weta, the special-effects company that did all the work for the “Lord of the Rings” movies, as well as “King Kong” and “The Chronicles of Narnia” series developed and built a realistic-looking mermaid tail so Nadya can swim. Now she has a fully functional mermaid tail with an attached suit, fulfilling every girl’s fantasy of looking just like a ‘real’ mermaid.

Alys Beach Call for Entries in 2009 Digital Graffiti

Alys Beach announced that it will host the second annual “Digital Graffiti” festival on Saturday, June 6, 2009. Digital Graffiti is the world’s first outdoor projection art festival, with artists using the latest technologies to project original works onto the town’s iconic white walls.

“Alys Beach is welcoming painters with open arms and white walls,” wrote USA Today in 2008. “But with projectors and laptops rather than spray cans.”

Sometimes referred to as “Photon Bombing,” “Guerilla Projection” or “Urban Projection,” underground artists around the globe have been using the latest design, animation and projection technologies to cast dynamic images onto skyscrapers and other urban structures as a means of artistic expression. But Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach is the first outdoor festival specifically organized to celebrate and showcase these unique talents.

“Our town literally becomes a blank canvas,” said Kelli Arnold, Alys Beach’s Events Coordinator.

224 Word Palindrome

Comedian Demetri Martin has masterfully created a 224 word poem that is also a palindrome! Genius! “wow!”

“Dammit I’m Mad”

         -by Demetri Martin

Dammit I’m mad.

Evil is a deed as I live.

God, am I reviled? I rise, my bed on a sun, I melt.

To be not one man emanating is sad. I piss.

Alas, it is so late. Who stops to help?

Man, it is hot. I’m in it. I tell.

I am not a devil. I level “Mad Dog”.

Ah, say burning is, as a deified gulp,

In my halo of a mired rum tin.

I erase many men. Oh, to be man, a sin.

Is evil in a clam? In a trap?

No. It is open. On it I was stuck.

Rats peed on hope. Elsewhere dips a web.

Be still if I fill its ebb.

Ew, a spider… eh?

We sleep. Oh no!

Deep, stark cuts saw it in one position.

Part animal, can I live? Sin is a name.

Both, one… my names are in it.

Murder? I’m a fool.

A hymn I plug, deified as a sign in ruby ash,

A Goddam level I lived at.

On mail let it in. I’m it.

Oh, sit in ample hot spots. Oh wet!

A loss it is alas (sip). I’d assign it a name.

Name not one bottle minus an ode by me:

“Sir, I deliver. I’m a dog”

Evil is a deed as I live.

Dammit I’m mad.
