Belk’s Fall 2009 Style Statements

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Prim & Proper
This trend offers delicious dressmaker details such as romantic flowers, bows, ruffles, tiers and draping. Elegant textiles like lace, lush wools, satin and charmeuse allow women to easily explore their feminine side.

The Highlands
This is the perfect trend for a divine dose of English Country. Prepare to plaid - then add paisleys, checks, animal prints, tweeds and winter florals. A plethora of patterns is a must.

Sharp Cuts
Sleek is chic and architectural shapes are the signature of this trend. Slim pant legs, the strong shoulder, stand collars, seaming and folding - all details that guarantee sophisticated style and often give looks that ’80s edge.

Folk Finery
In this last style statement, create a Bohemian tapestry inspired by India, Tibet, Russia and Eastern Europe. Embroideries, embellishments and “other world” textiles have a gypsy flare.

Discovering Houston 8

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

dsc_5936_rev

Last weekend, a couple of us went shopping at the new Houston 8 store in Destin. Our entire experience at the trendy clothing shop was amazing! We thought the fashion forward clothing was very cool and Linda, the sales associate who helped us, was incredibly attentive and helpful. When we left, our merchandise was encased in these beautiful bags that none of us would begin to throw away. We will probably keep them to use as purses or beach bags!

The contemporary boutique says they cater to those leading a “Life Less Formal.” The casually chic shop carries a variety of denim, tees, and contemporary wear for every age and generation. The jewel in their crown is a designer denim collection that rivals boutiques from New York City to Los Angeles. All of their fashion lines complement the endlessly hip, relaxed and stylish denim selections sure to provide a phenomenal look.We just wanted to give a heads up about this shopping gem!

Simply Chic

Looking classic has never been cooler. Tried-and-true clothes take center stage in the next statement called Simply Chic. Waist definition, vest treatments, puff sleeves, Peter Pan collars, bows, ruffles and ribbon are important. Textiles take a traditional turn - yes, the usual suspects: linen, cotton, eyelet, lace, sheers and satin. Prints are plentiful; there is a fondness for florals along with dots, checks and plaids. Look for sheath and shirtdresses, shorts, crops and fitted blazers.

Simply chic accessories are the icing on the cake. Ladylike and luxurious looks are back, such as vintage-inspired pearls, brooches and dramatic earrings; belts and tailored clutches and satchels add the perfect polish.

This week, IMG Models, the world’s number one model management firm, recently announced that in the current Swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated six models from the renowned agency will be featured––more than any other agency and a record for IMG Models.

VIE would like to share in IMG’s congratulation to Daniella Sarahyba, Esti Ginzberg, Hilary Rhoda, Jarah Mariano, Jessica Gomes and Tori Pravers on their inclusion of the upcoming issue of the 2009 Swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated.

Last year for the inaugural issue of VIE - People + Places we went to Fashion Week at Bryant Park in New York. It was a thrilling experience to see some of fashion’s greats pose for our cameras and display their newest creations. We received word from fashion designer Rebecca Taylor—whose designs are sold in Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus—that some of  her new designs will be shown at Fashion Week this year on Feb 19th. Her clothing can be found in chic boutiques across America, Europe and Japan. Celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz and Julia Stiles are a few of the customers who have requested her fine craftsmanship. Her designs can also be found on television shows such as “Sex & the City,” the “Today Show” and “The View.”

The following describes the creative inspiration behind Rebecca Taylor’s newest collection:

The Rebecca Taylor Fall 2009 Collection is inspired by imagery from Northern European fairy tales. The palette is intense with pastel shades of field flowers and the Scandinavian Sea; contrasted with deep hues of violet, beetroot and pomegranate. Soft oversized wrap coats are belted to emphasize the waist and are worn over cool ruffled blouson tops tucked into wide leg trousers. Ultra feminine languid tops and playful dresses inspired by 1940’s bias cuts are embellished with artisanal metals that compliment the ethereal layers of luminescent chiffon. Chunky Lucite jewelry is layered to juxtapose the delicate fabrics.

Chocolate Fashion Show!

choco-show-1.jpg

Two weeks ago the 11th Annual Chocolate Show hit New York. The three day event showcases fine chocolates and chocolate related goodies from around the world, but the part we found most interesting is the highlight of the event: the Chocolate Fashion Show. Designers team with chocolatiers and pastry chefs to create carefully crafted chocolate fashion wear modeled at the show. What could be more exquisitely paired than chocolate and fashion?!

Sylvie Douce & Francois Jeantet are the geniuses behind this masterpiece. Partners in business and life, they are the CEOs of Event International, Inc., a Paris-based international marketing, press relations and event production agency. Together they have created and implemented national and international campaigns for renowned clients such as Mercedes-Benz, Heineken, Kraft Foods, Boucheron, Chaumet and Rolex.

In the 90’s they conceived the brilliant and delicious idea of a chocolate show for the public and the Salon du Chocolat was born in Paris. In its first year, the Salon welcomed 40,000 visitors. Each year since, the show has increased in popularity. Based on the enthusiastic responses of American visitors, Sylvie and Francois chose New York, the food capital of the United States, as the site for a U.S. Show. In 1998, the first Chocolate Show was held on Thanksgiving weekend and was a smashing success. With locations in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow and Shanghai, it would seem this craze is catching on.

Fashion from the Recycling Bin

Environmentally savvy fashion forward thinkers are getting creative these days. On the international scene Surya Graf, a Brisbane, Australia-based product designer, has created the Spare Tire Bike Tube Belt. The stylish Spare Tire Belt is constructed out of reclaimed bicycle inner tubes, allowing cyclists to sport their passion in their fashion sense. Graf was in search of a smart recycling solution to all of the tube garbage from old inner tubes. He began to collect used mountain bike tubes from local cycle shops who were glad to have them off their hands and out of the trash, and the Spare Tire Belt was born. One of the most unique elements of the Spare Tire Belt is that the tubes come from all types of manufacturers and distributors so each belt carries its own exclusive markings and specific details.

Closer to home, Annette Newbill Trujillo at the Newbill Collection by the Sea, art gallery and boutique fashion retailer in Seaside, Florida is selling interesting recycled wear herself. She carries artists like Jeff Davis who creates bowls, snack trays, clocks and coasters from old vinyl records and others like Graham Bergh who makes bowls, business card holders, photo frames and clocks from recycled bicycle chains and sprockets. Day Moore and Alison Grieveson craft bags from recycled vinyl billboards and advertising banners. Cynthia Goldner makes clocks from old computer parts and CD’s and Steve Buss makes clocks from cans, whisks and slinkys! One of our favorites though was artist Renee Christopher from Oregon who makes purses from recycled tire inner tubes with reclaimed water supply hose handles as pictured here. Christopher says the handbags are inspired by her vision of today’s woman and, “Prove that durability need not be dowdy, nor femininity fussy and fragile.”
