For the 16th Year, Hombre Golf Club Will Host the 2nd Stage of the PGA TOUR Qualifying School. The School will begin with practice rounds today, November 16th and Tuesday November 17th. The tournament will start Wednesday, November 18th and conclude Saturday, November 21st with a rain date of Sunday, November 22nd. The PGA TOUR National Qualifying Tournament — otherwise known as q-school — is not a school in the traditional sense of the word, but the lessons learned while competing certainly can be life-changing. In reality, q-school is a survival test of as many as three tournaments that will eventually determine the players who earn their PGA TOUR cards for the 2010 season.

This week, South Walton locals Greg and Jane Bahr sent 30a.com this photo of their son, CW2 Jeffrey Bahr, who is currently stationed in eastern Afghanistan. Jeff is representing our favorite strip of highway on his Chinook helicopter which he flies as part of Task Force Viper, Operation Enduring Freedom. That’s one way to keep your community with you abroad! This week as we’re honoring the men and women who serve our country, we would just like to say thanks to Jeff, his family and all of the other military men and women who sacrifice for our nation.

Sister Schubert’s recent trip to Huntsville, Alabama was an amazing success! Over 900 women attended the Christian Women’s Job Corps Circles Luncheon at the Von Braun Civic Center where Sister Schubert was the guest speaker on November 6, 2009. The event celebrated the achievements of women in the community who have overcome difficult circumstances to improve themselves, their families and those around them.
The following day, Sister conducted a cooking demonstration and book signing to a sold-out crowd of 95 people at the 25th Annual Under the Christmas Tree Market presented by Randolph School. This was a special treat for Sister since not only did she get to raise funds for a great school, but she had the opportunity to cook with her daughter Chrissie of Chrissie Schubert’s Homemade Treats for the event!

Sister Schubert was recently interviewed on Pensacola-based NPR affiliate WUWF about her new cookbook, Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters and her Ukrainian orphanage, Sasha’s Home, which her book sales benefit through her charitable organization Barnes Family Foundation. In addition to sharing her love of baking, Sister also discusses her decision to use local publishing and printing companies for her book in order to support businesses in the COLA 2 COLA region. Congratulations to the Big Bend Scenic Byway, which has just achieved National Scenic Byway status by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration! The coastal route along US Highway 98 in Franklin County and the forest trails through Wakulla, and Leon Counties link Florida’s Gulf Coast with the capital city Tallahassee.
The National Scenic Byway program was established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States. There are currently 125 such designated Byways in 44 states. The program awards National designation based on the road’s important scenic, natural, historical, cultural, archaeological or recreational qualities.
Pam Portwood, Program Coordinator said, “The Big Bend Scenic Byway features over 200 miles of forests, wildlife, historic forts, battlegrounds, museums, beaches, fishing villages, historic towns and rural communities.”

This month, in Destin, two prominent surgeons’ formally presented Nero’s leash to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. Nero is a sixteen-month-old Dutch Sheppard, who is the newest member of the Sheriff’s Office to take a “bite out of Crime”.
Dr. William Burden and Dr. L. Scott Ennis of Destin Plastic Surgery donated over six-thousand dollars to purchase this needed K-9 officer. Nero is now out of the academy after completing an intensive, 410 hours of certification training.
Nero now joins three drug K-9 officers at the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Michael A. Adkinson, Jr. says “Walton County has the unenviable distinction of having a large number of clandestine meth labs in the state, and our K-9 officers provide a valuable resource in locating them”.
